Étude is a training journal, and a training journal is personal. This page says exactly what we hold, why, where it lives, and how to have it removed. It is written to be read.

Who is responsible

Étude is operated by Howard Nedd, registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK) under number 84742909, trading as Étude. You can reach us at hello@etude.fit.

We are the controller of the personal data described here: we decide what the app needs in order to work, and nothing more.

Using Étude without an account

You can use Étude without signing in. Everything you log then stays on your phone and never reaches us. We cannot see it, and we cannot recover it if the phone is lost.

What we hold when you sign in

If you create an account, we store:

  • Your email address, so you can sign in and so we can send your sign-in code. If you use Sign in with Apple and choose to hide your email, we only see the private relay address Apple gives us
  • Your name, if you enter it or if Apple or Google share it when you sign in, so the app can greet you
  • Your training journal: sessions, exercises, sets, weights, repetitions, times, distances, notes, routines and your preferences
  • Bodyweight readings, if you choose to log them

Training and bodyweight are sensitive, and we treat them that way

Bodyweight and training records can say something about your health. We hold them only because you chose to enter them, only to show them back to you on your devices, and we never use them for anything else. You can delete any reading in the app, or everything at once by deleting your account.

What we deliberately do not collect

No location, no contacts, no photos, no health data from other apps, and no advertising identifier.

No analytics, no trackers and no advertising, in the app or on this website. Nothing about you is sold or shared for marketing, by us or anyone else.

The rest timer reminds you with a notification that your phone schedules for itself. Nothing is sent to us to make that happen.

Why we are allowed to hold it

For your account and your journal, our basis is the performance of a contract: you asked us to keep your journal safe and in step across your devices, and an account is how we do that. Where your journal includes information about your health, such as bodyweight, we rely on your explicit consent, which you give by choosing to enter it and can withdraw at any time by deleting it.

We also rely on our legitimate interest in keeping the service secure and working.

Who else touches the data

We keep the list of companies involved short, and your journal stays inside the European Union:

  • Supabase: the database and sign-in system that holds your account and journal, hosted in the EU (Ireland)
  • Resend: sends your sign-in codes, from its EU (Ireland) region
  • Apple or Google: only if you choose to sign in with them, to confirm who you are
  • Cloudflare: runs our domain and forwards mail sent to us
  • Netlify: hosts this website, which holds no personal data at all
  • Expo: delivers updates to the app itself; no personal data is involved

How long we keep it

Your account and journal are kept while your account exists. When you delete your account in the app, it is removed from our database immediately. Encrypted backups that may still contain it are overwritten within 7 days.

Your rights, and how to use them

Under the GDPR you can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, ask us to restrict or stop using it, and object to how we use it. You can also ask for it in a portable form.

Two of those you can do yourself in the app at any moment: Me, then Preferences, then Export my data gives you everything in one file; Delete account removes your account and everything in it.

For anything else, email hello@etude.fit and we will respond within 30 days.

If you think we have handled your data badly, you can complain to the Dutch data protection authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, at autoriteitpersoonsgegevens.nl. You do not need to ask us first.

Children

Étude is not intended for anyone under 16, and we do not knowingly hold data about children.

Changes to this page

If we change what we collect or why, we will update this page and the date at the top. If a change materially affects you, we will tell you in the app.
